44th Annual Idaho Governor’s Cup Scholarship Event Returns to Coeur d’ Alene September 6 - 8

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho – (September 5, 2018) – The 44th Annual Idaho Governor’s Cup Scholarship Event returns to Coeur d’Alene on September 6-8, where more than 600 participants will enjoy sporting events, social activities and evening entertainment to raise funds in support of Idaho students and their post-secondary education.

Since 1974, the Idaho Governor’s Cup has awarded scholarships to Idaho high school graduates attending post-secondary institutions in the state. This year, 36 students received an Idaho Governor’s Cup scholarship, including the first Cecil D. Andrus Excellence in Education Scholarship which is presented to a student pursuing a career in education. The program awards academic scholarship recipients $3,000 per year for up to four years and career-technical scholarship recipients $3,000 per year for up to three years.

This will be the last year that Governor “Butch” Otter and First Lady Lori Otter preside over the event. During their tenure, the scholarship program helped more than 300 Idaho students pursue post-secondary education.

“For 12 years we have come together to raise money and then award scholarships for deserving Idaho students,” said Governor Otter. “The First Lady and I are thrilled to lead this effort, one last time, as we seek to expand educational opportunities for a new group of Idaho students eager to take advantage of all the educational opportunities available to them at the community colleges and universities across our great state.”

Funding for the scholarships comes primarily from the annual event, which is alternately held each September in Coeur d’Alene or Sun Valley. Nearly 100 companies and organizations sponsor the three-day event. Premier sponsors include CenturyLink, Hecla Mining, Idaho Forest Group, Mountain View Hospital, Simplot and Syringa Networks. Major sponsors include Blue Cross of Idaho, Itafos, Micron and PotlatchDeltic.

In addition to sponsorships and donations, the final night includes an annual auction of an ‘All Idaho’ gun to raise additional scholarship funds. The All-Idaho Long-Range, Competition 6.5 Creedmoor Rifle and Sportsmen’s Package includes components from Idaho companies Axial Precision, NightForce Precision, American Reserve Munitions, Kryptek Outdoors Group, Ultra Shooting Solutions, Independence Indoor Shooting, Center Target Sports, Guns ‘n Gear, GemTech and Hyndman Insurance. In past years, it has auctioned off for more than $40,000.

2016 scholarship recipient Josh Herbert will address the attendees at the closing dinner at the Hagadone Event Center. Josh is attending the University of Idaho, pursuing Percussion Performance with a minor in Marketing.
